Catherine O’Hara, beloved actress best known for her iconic roles in Home Alone and the award-winning comedy series Schitt’s Creek, has died at the age of 71.

O’Hara memorably portrayed Kate McCallister, the devoted mother of mischievous Kevin McCallister in Home Alone. Her warm, relatable performance helped turn the holiday film into a global classic, earning the admiration of audiences worldwide.

While an official cause of death has not yet been publicly confirmed, O’Hara’s manager told media outlets that the actress passed away following a brief illness.

According to reports, emergency responders were called to O’Hara’s Brentwood, California, home at approximately 4:48 a.m. on Friday, January 30. She was transported to a Los Angeles hospital in serious condition, according to a spokesperson for the Los Angeles Fire Department.

Following the news of her passing, tributes quickly poured in — including a deeply emotional message from her Home Alone costar Macaulay Culkin, whose career was launched alongside O’Hara’s in the beloved film.

In a heartfelt Instagram post, Culkin referred to O’Hara as “mama,” writing:
“Mama. I thought we had time. I wanted more. I wanted to sit in a chair next to you. I heard you. But I had so much more to say. I love you. I’ll see you later.”

Catherine O’Hara is survived by her husband, Bo Welch, and their two sons, Matthew and Luke. Her legacy as a gifted actress and cultural icon will continue to live on through her unforgettable performances.
